Description
The site of the St. Johann plant in Basel, headquarters of Novartis, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, was transformed from a production complex into a research and administration center, more precisely into a campus for the dissemination of knowledge and the development of innovations. Architect and urban planner Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani was entrusted with the planning of the entire project. Vittorio Lampugnani's new office building at the central Fabrikstraße 12 was originally intended to serve as a model building for the newly structured urban campus.
The carefully proportioned perforated façade of white Carrara marble, with its light and very urban character, forms an interesting contrast to the warm, muted colours of the interiors. The 6m-high entrance hall, finished entirely in European walnut, forms the prelude to a central, elongated stairwell that cuts through the entire height of the building as a separate, readable structure. The staircase walls on both sides are divided into a pillar-beam construction and allow views through the entire depth of the building. The single-flight sky ladder, its platforms designed as bridges, opens up each floor at a different point; no two floors are the same. Work cabinets for two to three people divide each floor like wooden furniture, creating work areas of different sizes that flow into one another and are at the same time screened off, a modern working world.1
For the redesign of the Novartis office and administration building, Clina supplied almost 2.000 m² of capillary tube mats for the installation of heating and cooling ceilings, most of which were designed as acoustic plaster ceilings and ensure pleasant room temperatures in the various work areas.
